Last week I got a brand new Razer Stargazer, which if you listen to our 77th podcast you’ll hear all about it. You’ll also hear about how I have tried to figure out why I can’t run all of my USB devices on my motherboard (ASUS x99 DELUXE U3.1) at once. Tonight I took the time to test my motherboard, taking parts out step by step to see how the motherboard reacted. Below you can see my findings, to sum up though, my motherboard thinks a bunch of things are connected via USB. I have tried to get support from ASUS but sadly after sitting on the phone for an hour holding for their tech support I got kicked off the line. I turned to Twitter to get their attention. Hopefully soon I’ll get some help but in the mean time you may find what I’ve found to be interesting, which is that with NOTHING but one usb keyboard plugged into my computer, my motherboard thinks that I have two keyboards, one mouse and four hubs connected. That’s not right… right?
So I started off by taking a picture of what my motherboard thinks is plugged in with my usual lineup of devices. I assure you I do not have four keyboards or two mice.
ThenI started taking things out of my computer. First was all the devices plugged in the back.
Since sanity or reason didn’t come back to my motherboard’s usb ports I started to take out internal parts to see what happened. First came out my RAID controller.
Then I took out the additional USB 3.1 card that came with my Asus motherboard which I use to make sure my HTC VIVE has all the juice it wants.
As you can see by now, I’m not sure my motherboard understands what a USB device/keyboard/hub is. So last ting to try was to unplug all the things inside my case. My Watercooler from NZXT (Kraken x61), and the front usb ports of my case.
That’s where I am. Nothing but ONE keyboard plugged in and a GPU and the motherboard still thinks I have two keyboards, a mouse and four hubs. I did try resetting the cmos and all the other fun MB tricks up my sleeve to no avail. Sadly though, I have also not been able to get tech support from ASUS. After being on hold for a hour one night only to be disconnected I went to twitter where they did respond and asked me to DM them with more details which I did but I have not gotten a response yet. I’ll update this as I search for an answer. I hope I don’t have to stop buying ASUS products over this. I’ve been a long time fan.
