3D Printing, the ability to print a 3D model into a real world object has been all the rage with hobbyists and product designers for several years now. And New York based BotObjects has just upped the ante with the world’s first full color 3D printer. According to the company, their process works much like a standard inkjet printer. They have ABS plastic in 4 colors, which will mix and match during printing to create virtually any shade the user desires. They claim the ProDesk 3D prints high resolution models with ease.
It’s amazing how quickly the world of 3D printing is developing. I still don’t see a use for it personally, but the day will come when we will all have one of these in our homes. The killer app for this tech will be when the day comes that you shop online for anything you want, purchase and download the 3D model of your choice, and then 3D print the product at home. At this point these machines use ABS plastic as the printing material, which is fantastic for professionals who need a quick, precise real world rendering of a product design. But one day, these things will print out the actual finished product. Imagine downloading your new smartphone as a 3D model, and then printing it!
This is a nice step in that direction.
