I was lucky enough to get in the trial of the new Google Maps and so far I’m very happy with it. I like how the things you click on on the map open in a card like interface on the left side of the screen instead of a pop up. I always felt annoyed when that happened because if I scrolled around it would oddly get cut off. The look is very much like the Google Now or Google Plus cards interface that I expect all of Google’s apps to get. I also appreciate the full screen like presentation of the design. It’s using every inch of your browser window to show you large and colorful maps. Overall this isn’t a WOW update. It’s just an update. I’m very guilty of wanting every new tech announcement to wow me and in some way change the way I interact with the world on a very intimate level. When that doesn’t happen I tend to just meh the whole thing but this deserves some kudos. What also deserves some kudos is Google for using Burma Superstar as an example of Google Maps in their Google I/O presentation. If you’ve never been, you need to go next time you are in San Francisco. Make sure to order the Tea Leaf Salad and the Vegetarian Samusa Soup.
