PopSci is reporting on the world’s first stop motion animated short film made using atoms. It’s pretty amazing stuff. The goal of the research is to reduce the amount of atoms needed to store 1 bit of computer information. The best current hard drives use about one million atoms to store 1 bit. These researchers have it down to 12 atoms per bit! The hope is that this research will one day lead to computer storage an order of magnitude better than what we have today.
The short film is basically showing off the fact that now they have control at that level.
