With all this talk about the next generation of gaming coming. Let’s take a look at a classic PS1 launch commercial, circa 1995.
The video starts with a woman’s voice in a cartoonish Russian accent daring us to reserve our Playstations before launch. Then we get some footage of Namco’s Ridge Racer and Wipeout, among other classics. And finally the announcer sheds the accent to wow us with the specs. “360,000 textured polygons per second! CD quality sound, multiple custom processors, and a dedicated 32 bit RISC CPU!”
For comparison, the upcoming PS3 game Beyond:2 Souls will feature 30,000 polygons PER GAME CHARACTER. The next Gen systems are expected to feature BILLIONS of polygons per second.
Still, I remember being floored by those graphics in 1995.
